What is Missaukee Conservation District?
Missaukee Conservation District works locally to foster healthier relationships between people and the land. It is governed by local citizens that have been elected or appointed to serve on the board. Decisions are made with input from local people at the local level. Conservation District staff empowers citizens to manage their private lands for the benefit of the local community and beyond.
Why is additional funding needed?
Missaukee Conservation District is literally running out of funds. The most stable funding provided is for
one-26 hour per week staff person through the Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control agreement with Missaukee County. Without a more stable source of funding, programs will be severely reduced. State funding for operations ceased to exist years ago.
Benefits
In fiscal year 2013 Missaukee County budgeted $38,356 for Missaukee Conservation District which was leveraged into $823,919 for programs that preserve and protect Missaukee County's natural resources. Revenues were obtained through grants and partners. Most grants are a "one-time" deal and typically offer dollars for a single program such as a forestry cost share program or improvements to the Foot Trail with signage---not funds for staff to actually do the work.
What does Missaukee Conservation District do?
Missaukee Conservation District is probably best known for their Spring Seedling Sale, Household Hazardous Waste/Electronics/Tire collections and Missaukee County Plat Books. They also partner with Missaukee County in administration of the Soil Erosion and Sedimentation Control Program. This partnership assists Missaukee Conservation District in serving as a catalyst to promote the wise stewardship of natural resources through education, planning and technical assistance.
